Selecting the right climbing rope is essential for both safety and performance. The rope absorbs the energy of a fall, works together with your belay device and must withstand abrasion in demanding conditions. Depending on your discipline, you should consider rope type, diameter, weight and technical specifications before making a decision.

Types of Climbing Ropes

Single Ropes

Single ropes are the most versatile and commonly used ropes for sport climbing and indoor gyms. Marked with the symbol “1”, they are used as a single strand. Typical diameters range from 8.5 to 10.5 mm. Thinner ropes are lighter and designed for experienced climbers, while thicker ropes offer increased durability and better handling for intensive use.

Half Ropes

Half ropes are used in pairs, with each strand clipped alternately into protection points. This reduces rope drag on wandering routes and increases safety in alpine terrain. They are a popular choice for multi-pitch climbing and mountaineering.

Twin Ropes

Twin ropes are also used in pairs, but both strands are clipped together into each protection point. Extremely lightweight, they are ideal for alpine climbing and ice climbing where minimizing weight is critical.

Semi-Static Ropes

Semi-static ropes have minimal elongation and are designed for canyoning, caving, rope access and rappelling. They are not suitable for lead climbing where dynamic fall absorption is required.
