How to choose climbing nuts and cams: protection types, range, and key features

Two main protection families can be identified within this category. Passive nuts, including traditional stoppers and hexes, work by seating securely in constrictions, tapering cracks, and natural rock irregularities. Their strengths include simple construction, low weight, strong durability, and excellent performance in terrain where the shape of the crack allows for a solid passive placement. Mechanical cams work differently, using spring-loaded lobes that adapt to the sides of a crack and make it easier to place protection quickly in parallel or less obvious crack shapes. That makes them extremely versatile, though usually heavier and more expensive than classic passive gear.

• Protection type: passive nuts are especially useful in tapering cracks and where low weight and simplicity matter, while cams make fast placements easier in more parallel crack systems.
• Working range: with mechanical cams, the expansion range of each size is a key factor because it determines how flexibly a piece can adapt to different crack widths.

• Weight and rack volume: nuts and hexes often help keep a rack lighter, while cams increase placement speed and versatility at the cost of more weight and bulk.

When choosing mechanical cams, it is worth paying attention to the number of lobes, overall placement stability, stem flexibility, and clarity of the size progression. All of these factors affect lead efficiency, anchor building, and how easily a complete rack of sizes can be organized. With passive nuts, shape, taper, and side profile matter just as much, because they determine how well the piece works with the natural geometry of the crack. Hexes and larger passive pieces can be especially effective in wider cracks and constrictions while also offering a strong weight-to-coverage ratio.

A conscious choice of nuts and cams should be based on the type of routes you climb most often and your level of experience in placing removable protection. Climbers building a first trad rack often combine classic nuts with selected cams to achieve a useful balance between cost, weight, and versatility. More experienced climbers usually fine-tune the rack to a specific rock type and route style, paying closer attention to size coverage, repeatable placements, and fast handling. That makes it much easier to build a rack of nuts and cams that genuinely improves safety and efficiency on trad and multi-pitch routes.
